First Peoples’ Assembly condemns broken promise to Raise The Age

Aug 13, 2024

The Victorian Government’s decision to walk back on its promise to raise the age at which children can be sent to prison to 14, has drawn widespread criticism from Aboriginal leaders, frontline organisations, and has been condemned by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

Assembly Co-chair, Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Dhudhuroa woman Ngarra Murray, said she was frustrated by the Government’s refusal to listen to Aboriginal communities or youth justice experts.

“Like every Aboriginal mother hearing this news, I am deeply disappointed and concerned. Children need support to learn from mistakes, not getting caught up in a broken system that inflicts more harm than good,” said Ms Murray.

Assembly Co-chair, Gunditjmara man Rueben Berg, said he was shocked by the decision and deeply concerned it was made without proper consultation with First Peoples’ organisations and leading health and legal experts given its disproportionate effect on Aboriginal children.

“The Premier has previously demonstrated she can work in good faith with First Peoples, but the decision taken yesterday is in stark contrast to this decision. It flies in the face of recommendations arising from the Yoorrook Justice Commission’s truth-telling process as well as countless other reports and inquires,” said Mr Berg.
