Assembly Meeting on Gunditjmara Country

Jun 28, 2024

This week our Members met on Gunditjmara Country to plan the next steps on the journey to Treaty.

We were honoured to be welcomed to Country by Aunty Maude, who shared stories with our Members and staff. We also spent an incredibly special day learning and hearing about First Peoples’ practice in action at Budj Bim.

This meeting saw the first appearance of Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation Reserved Seat holder, Lowana Moore. This is a significant milestone, marking the first addition to the Assembly through the Additional Pathway for Reserved Seats.

A proud Wamba Wamba woman, Lowana brings a wealth of experience, cultural knowledge, and a deep commitment to her community.

“Our ancestors have walked and cared for our Country for thousands of years. It is now our responsibility to continue in their footsteps and maintain our cultural connection to Country for future generations.”

Lowana Moore

Lowana shared a moving inaugural speech on the first day of the meeting. To learn more about Lowana, visit her Member profile here.

Throughout the meeting, Assembly Members discussed Treaty business and had good yarns about next steps forward. Some of the agenda items included a Treaty workshop, amendments to the Assembly Constitution, Member led items and operational reports.

With Statewide Treaty negotiations set to begin soon, we will keep yarning and getting Treaty ready.

If you’d like to get more involved in the Treaty journey, come along to an upcoming event near you, and if you’re mob, make time for a 1-on-1 yarn with an Engagement team member.

Thanks for walking with us!
