The Assembly’s elected Members had a productive few days on Gunaikurnai Country last week continuing to develop the key ideas they’ll take into the first round of Treaty negotiations with the Victorian Government!
There’s still work to be done and feedback to gather from mob across the state, but the main four concepts firming up as the priorities are:
1. A process and timetable for transferring decision-making powers from Government to First Peoples.
2. How recommendations from the Yoorrook Justice Commission should be implemented.
3. Expanding the Assembly’s roles so in addition to its own decision-making powers, it can also provide advice to government and ensure accountability.
4. Ways to properly respect and celebrate First Peoples’ cultures and languages.
What do you reckon?
Come along to one of our events, drop us line for a yarn, shoot us an email. We want to hear your ideas!
During the Assembly Meeting, the Members also voted to add a new seat in the Assembly for representatives of the Wamba Wamba/Wemba Wemba peoples, Traditional Owners of Country in north-west Victoria.
