Stolen Generations Redress Scheme

Assembly Response

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria is pleased to witness the recent (18/3) announcement by the Victorian State Government that it will be establishing a Stolen Generations Redress Scheme.

The Assembly recognises the immense damage inflicted upon the Stolen Generations and their families, cultures, languages and lores. We recognise our Stolen Generations and praise them for their strength, resilience and determination.

Aboriginal families in Victoria still feel the hurt and trauma caused by the forced removals of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families over the decades, through a policy of assimilation. The hurt and trauma continues to be lived by those directly affected by negative consequences spanning generations.

We are encouraged the Government has listened to members of the Assembly who raised a redress scheme during the Assembly first meeting last year. The Government has taken steps in the right direction in recognition of the fact that, aside from the Northern Territory, Victoria is the last Australian state to move to establish a redress scheme.

The Assembly looks forward to continuing to support the incredible and dedicated work of community leaders who have achieved the development of the Stolen Generations Redress Scheme.
