Welcome to our new CEO

We are excited to share Assembly news!

After an extensive national and international search spanning three months, the Assembly Board has appointed Mr Andrew (Andy) Gargett to the role of CEO, First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

The Assembly is dedicated to ensuring that the representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Victorian Treaty process has the best possible advice, and is supported by the highest quality personnel.

Andy is an accomplished senior leader with experience in the human rights and social justice fields, including work to achieve justice for Aboriginal people and communities.

Andy is currently the Executive Director, Stakeholder Engagement and Inclusion at the Department of Justice and Community Safety in Victoria. Before this, he contributed to the Treaty process in Victoria through his work with Aboriginal Victoria, in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Andy previously worked at Djirra, and at the Australian Human Rights Commission where he was Executive Officer of the Close the Gap Campaign, and worked in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner’s Office.

Andy will work with staff to support the Assembly Board, Co-Chairs and Members in their roles as elected Aboriginal representatives to achieve Treaty/Treaties in Victoria.

The appointment of a permanent CEO of the Assembly is an essential step getting communities closer to achieving Treaty or Treaties in Victoria. We want to share and celebrate this news, and we hope you join with the Assembly Board in welcoming Andy Gargett. He will commence in June 2020.

Importantly, to support the development of Aboriginal leadership in Victoria, a dedicated, identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander position of Deputy CEO will be created in the Assembly.
