The Assembly

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) is the voice of Aboriginal people in Victoria in the next stage of the Treaty process. It is made up of Victorian Traditional Owners, elected by Aboriginal communities, for Aboriginal communities, to advance our rights, interests and benefits.

Our mandate is to work with the State to establish Treaty processes that recognise our sovereignty as the First Peoples of Victoria, support self-determination, and realise our human rights, to make Victoria stronger for everyone.

The Role

Lead the preparation of the Negotiation Team and support the Assembly Co-Chairs and Committee Chairpersons in their leadership of negotiations so that they can adequately represent the Assembly in discussions with the State and ensure that the Assembly acts fairly and in good faith as a treaty partner.

You will integrate policy and research into the Assembly’s negotiation strategy. The position will be supported by a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the areas of legal, negotiation, policy analysis and research.

You will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships across the Aboriginal Community and other external stakeholders to broker optimal, mutually beneficial, good faith solutions to challenges as they arise in negotiations with the State.

Your previous experience and skill set includes:

  • Experience in leading the development of complex and innovative negotiations strategy and policy, including in a cross-cultural context
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Victorian Aboriginal landscape, communities and organisations
  • Experience in senior stakeholder management and relationship management.
  • In depth understanding of Victorian Government legal and policy requirements and decision-making processes
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • At least 10 years’ experience in the provision of strategic policy advice and guidance.
  • A collaborative and respectful approach
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Ability to synthesise complex information and communicate it simply and effectively
  • Relevant degree qualified or equivalent experience

Salary range: $185,000 (negotiable) – excluding superannuation.
