During its first term, the Assembly engaged with communities across the state to design and agree on a framework and process to enable Traditional Owners of Country to negotiate Treaties with the Government of Victoria.

Now, in its second term following the historic Treaty elections last year, the Assembly is preparing to commence actual negotiations with the Government about the statewide Treaty. It will also continue to support the various Traditional Owner groups to negotiate Treaties that reflect the aspirations and priorities in their areas.

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of history-making work for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who is passionate about the rights of First Peoples and self-determination.

Assembly Members have thanked the outgoing CEO Andy Gargett for his “leadership from behind” advising and supporting elected members to build the historic foundations for treaty in Victoria and helping the Assembly evolve into a powerful and innovative First Nations democratic institution. Andy will leave the Assembly when his contract expires in June.

With the elected Members settled in their various roles, the Self Determination Fund up and running, the Treaty Authority formed, and the Assembly on track to demonstrate it’s meeting the standards set by the Treaty Negotiation Framework, the timing is perfect to hand over the baton, ready for the next phase of the journey to Treaty.
