Next CEO appointed

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria is proud to announce the appointment of Damein Bell as its next CEO to manage the operational team that supports the elected Members implement their agenda. 

Damein Bell is a proud Gunditjmara man and has thirty years of experience across community development, education, native title, cultural heritage, tourism and Indigenous nation building. Alongside the Gunditjmara community, Damein worked on achieving the Budj Bim World Heritage Listing in 2019. 

Damein will commence the role in June ahead of the statewide Treaty negotiations between the Assembly and the Victorian Government. 

Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta, Dhudhuroa and Dja Dja Wurrung woman, and Assembly Co-Chair, Ngarra Murray, said the appointment marked an exciting new chapter for the Assembly. 

“Damein is a fantastic appointment for the Assembly, and on behalf of the Members I congratulate him on stepping into this role at such a critical point in our journey towards Treaty. As we lead our communities into the upcoming negotiations with the Victorian Government, we’ll be pleased to have Damein keeping the Assembly’s operations on track,” said Ms Murray. 

Damein Bell is a Senior Fellow for Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity and Fellow with the Royal Society of Victoria. He said he was looking forward to joining the Assembly at this pivotal moment and contributing to the self determination of First Peoples around Victoria. 

“I’m very proud to join the team in advancing the Assembly’s work towards Treaty outcomes in Victoria over the next few years,” said Mr Bell. 

Gunditjmara man, and Assembly Co-Chair, Rueben Berg, said the Assembly Members were thankful for the significant amount of work done by outgoing CEO Andy Gargett on the journey towards Treaty in Victoria.    

“Andy made significant contributions behind the scenes to pull together the mechanics of the Assembly. It gives Damein a lot to work with and build on the breadth of knowledge we have in our team as we enter this next crucial phase. Our message to all mob is now is the time to really show your support and get involved. So enrol with the Assembly and have your say,” said Mr Berg.
