Australia’s first Treaty is here

First Peoples in Victoria have been fighting for a Treaty for decades, to acknowledge the truth about what was done to Aboriginal people and make sure Aboriginal communities have the freedom and power to come up with and deliver practical solutions at a local level.

The Assembly has negotiated Australia’s first ever Treaty with the Victorian Government. In October 2025, Treaty legislation passed both houses of the Victorian Parliament and has been signed into law. This upcoming celebration on December 12th will be a chance for all who call Victoria home to mark this historic moment.

Traditional Owner groups across Victoria can also negotiate Treaties specific to their Country, to make sure local knowledge can inform decision-making at a community level.

Treaty will enable us our chance to right the wrongs of the past and create a better future together. It will help us all learn and deepen our understanding and connection to this place we all call home.
